Calypso – Automation of SSA's

Calypso implements the ISO standard for site-specific assessments of jack-up platforms in a computer program. The objective is to fully automate site-specific assessments. The user provides a description of the platform only once and merely provides metocean and soil conditions per site. Calypso generates the model of the jack-up in elevated condition, performs a site-specific analysis according to ISO 19905-1 and provides the user with an overview of the results.

Calypso is being used internally for performing SSA’s and support of design of jack-up platforms. We are working on an interface to make the software commercially available to the offshore industry. Services

Rig Move Assistance

The rig move is arguably the single most critical operation of a jack-up platform. Numerous expertises are required to perform this feat and typically numerous companies with sometimes opposing interests are involved. Therefore, proper interface management is key. SOCO employees have extensive experience in assisting in the preparation of and review of rig move procedures as well as providing assistance on-board to the OIM during the rig move. Among others, SOCO offers the following services pertaining to the rig move:

  • Interpreting and capitalizing upon weather limitations as stated in the rigs designer’s manual or SSA
  • Minimizing RPD without compromising positioning through optimized pinning strategies
  • Interpreting the SSA to objectively confirm that all requirements are met, such as preload an RPD
  • Assisting in operating the jacking system

In practice we find that our presence on a rig is appreciated by all parties on board and onshore as we combine a strong theoretical background in jack-up design and analysis with lots of hands-on experience enabling us to answer many unforeseen questions and help solve unforeseen issues.

Site-specific assessment of jack-ups

A site-specific assessment is required when a jack-up platform moves to a new location or is intended to operate outside of previously stated limitations. SOCO employs in-house software Calypso to perform the SSA. The high level of automation yields a quick delivery and straightforward quality assurance. For some types of platforms, wind turbine installation jack-ups specifically, the operating condition may be governing. SOCO offers SSAs that include limitations on crane operations.

Regarding SSAs, SOCO offers the following services:

  • Performing a site-specific assessment according to ISO-19905
  • SSA review, indicating conservatisms and room for improvement
  • Review of the foundation assessment performed as part of the SSA
  • Assist the operator interpreting the SSA report and including it in the rig move procedure
  • Coming soon: offer clients a web-portal to perform an SSA based on site data and a parametric jack-up model

Software development

It is often said that a good engineer should be able to code. At SOCO we believe that if programming is used properly within a project, the project itself will run more efficient, more flexible and with better quality assurance and traceability. We see programming as an integral part of improvement of processes. However, we also strongly believe that the wheel should not be reinvented. Every engineering company has its proprietary knowledge, which is not available in any commercial or open source software. This knowledge could be captured in small amounts of code, such as plug-ins, pre- and post-processors, leaving the generic stuff such as number crunching numerical solvers, structural analysis, motion response etc. to proven, existing code.

SOCO offers the following services regarding software development as stand-alone service or integrated in project execution:

  • Process optimization of repetitive work, such as batch processing or extensive Excel work
  • Maintenance of and addition to existing in-house Fortran programs
  • Development of new engineering tools in Python or Matlab
  • Porting of existing Fortran code to Python or Matlab, possibly combined with integration in existing software

Global Performance Analysis

SOCO provides Global Performance Analysis (GPA) for different types of floaters, such as FPSO’s, production semi-submersibles, moored drilling semi-submersibles and floating wind turbines. Global performance analysis includes strength checks on the mooring system, maximum offset checks, airgap checks and if required motion data for riser analysis. GPA is performed as part of the initial design, in case of tie-backs and in case of life extension. In the latter two cases, a key aspect is to determine whether up-to-date or grand-fathered-in metocean data should be used.

For mooring systems involving polyester ropes, it is important to properly model the non-linear stiffness of the ropes. (Overly) conservative approaches may lead to overestimation of offsets and tensions by 20%. SOCO associates have witnessed several mooring rope tests for stiffness and strength, wrote specifications for polyester ropes, are experienced in working with spring buoys and have been involved in several JIPs regarding mooring systems.

SOCO provides the following services pertaining to global performance analysis of floaters:

  • Global performance analysis and motion response analysis for riser analysis
  • Interface management between mooring specialists, riser specialists and naval architects
  • Process optimization to minimize license costs and maximize quality control
  • Software tools for implementation of proper modeling of non-linear polyester stiffness
  • Design review and general consultancy

Disconnectable FPSOs

Proper mooring system design is the key enabling technology for disconnectable FPSOs, particularly in deep water. The properties of the mooring system impose requirements upon the buoy and vice versa. Such properties of the mooring system, apart from regular strength and restoring force, are initial vertical stiffness, residual vertical stiffness when the buoy is submerged, restoring force when the buoy is submerged and many others. Properties of the buoy are the net buoyancy, the compartment size, shape and many others. Proper buoy and mooring system design may enable the use of relatively cheap and robust steel catenary risers instead of expensive systems involving riser towers and jumpers. It is clear that a mooring system for disconnectable FPSOs should aid buoy and riser design, as these systems have much higher cost than the mooring system itself.

SOCO associates are experienced in designing such systems and as part of the company philosophy understand the multidisciplinary intricacies of disconnectable FPSOs. One patent regarding deep water disconnectable mooring systems was conceived by a SOCO associate (US10059409). Among others, SOCO offers the following services pertaining to the disconnectable FPSOs:

  • Mooring system design and analysis
  • Provide interface management between involved disciplines including mooring system design, riser system design, buoy structural design, turret structural design and mechanical interface design

Standard Offshore Consultants and Operators -SOCO- was founded in 2019 by Maas Hoogeveen as a platform for him to share his in-depth knowledge and practical experience in offshore engineering with the energy industry.
